The Educational Association of Worcester (EAW) upholds the constitutional and human right to education for every child living in the United States, regardless of immigration status. As a union of educators, it is our duty to speak out against injustice when any child’s fundamental right to learn is disrupted or inhibited. Across the country, this right has come under threat at the hands of ICE. Students and educators have been tear-gassed, assaulted, and detained. Here in Massachusetts, we have seen children used as bait and community members deported. We know students are carrying this anxiety into the classroom. We see students leaving our schools when their families face detainment. We hear students expressing fear for their friends and family. As educators, we know a student’s learning environment should be defined by care and belonging rather than fear and intimidation. The EAW will continue to uphold the rights of our community members to live, work, and advocate for themselves without the threat of federal interference. In Worcester, the Heart of the Commonwealth, we stand together with our immigrant students, families, and neighbors. In our commitment to protecting our students and their right to an education, we call on the redirection of federal resources towards the needs of our communities, especially our public schools.
